Strategic Analysis and Operational Challenges within the New Extended Producer Responsibility Framework

On February 12, the Sustainability Projects team at SINTAC attended the EPR Systems 2026 Fair, organized by the Cluster de Innovación de Envase y Embalaje at Feria Valencia.

The event brought together directors of the leading Extended Producer Responsibility Systems (EPRs) for packaging in Spain, providing a strategic overview of the system’s evolution, the current regulatory landscape, and the operational challenges facing the sector. This forum has established itself as a key platform for analyzing the new regulatory framework and its implications for manufacturers, distributors, and waste management operators.

Among the most notable contributions was the presentation by Patricia Ramos-Catalina Clemente, Operations Director at IMPLICA, who delivered a rigorous and practical perspective on the operational challenges associated with the implementation and development of these systems, highlighting critical aspects such as efficiency, traceability, and coordination among value chain stakeholders.

The agenda also featured two highly relevant roundtable discussions. The first focused on legislative aspects, addressing strategic topics such as the Deposit, Return and Refund System (DRRS) and reuse models. The second centered on technical and operational aspects, examining the main challenges related to the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and its practical application within organizations.

In an increasingly demanding regulatory environment, participation in forums of this nature enables companies to anticipate regulatory developments, align their strategies, and strengthen their preparedness for new legal obligations.

At SINTAC, through our environmental consultancy and circular economy project management services, we support companies and organizations in the design, development, and implementation of their sustainability strategies, whether through Individual Extended Producer Responsibility Systems (SIRAPs) or Collective Extended Producer Responsibility Systems (SCRAPs). Our goal is to transform regulatory challenges into opportunities for operational improvement, enhanced efficiency, and long-term value creation, contributing to a more sustainable and competitive business model.
